China Shines in Powerlifting at Paris 2024 Paralympics as Guo Lingling Breaks World Record.

China's athletes made a powerful start at the Paris 2024 Paralympics in the sport of powerlifting, with Guo Lingling leading the charge. On the first day of the competition, Lingling set a new world record in the women’s up to 45kg class, showcasing her strength and determination.

Guo Lingling’s World Record Lift

Guo Lingling, who is 35 years old, had already set the world record for the bench press earlier in February 2024 by lifting 121kg. In Paris, she managed to better her own record, lifting an impressive 123kg. This achievement secured her the gold medal and continued China's dominance in powerlifting.

Britain’s Zoe Newson claimed the silver medal in the same event but was 14kg behind Lingling’s record-breaking lift, managing a best of 109kg. Despite the competition, Lingling’s performance was on another level.

After her victory, Lingling expressed her joy, saying, “I am very excited and happy, and the atmosphere at the stadium was also very inspiring to me.” She also praised her country’s dedication to sports training, adding, “The Chinese government spends a lot of money training people. So China will always be first on the gold medal tally.”

Cui Zhe Wins Her First Gold Medal

China’s success didn’t stop there. Cui Zhe, another Chinese powerlifter, also made history by winning the gold medal in the women’s up to 41kg category. At 37 years old, Cui finally secured the top spot on the podium after winning four silver medals in her previous Paralympic appearances. In Paris, she lifted an impressive 119kg, almost three times her body weight.

Cui shared her emotions after the victory, stating, “I have always had faith in myself and believed that I could get the gold. I’ve been very determined with this target and never given up.” She added that becoming a Paralympic champion had always been her goal, and she was proud to finally achieve it.

Men’s Powerlifting Results

The men’s powerlifting competitions also saw some impressive performances. Jordan’s Omar Qarada successfully defended his 49kg title, lifting 181kg to secure the gold medal. Qarada’s victory came after three years of continuous preparation since his last Paralympic win at Tokyo 2020.

Similarly, Kazakhstan’s David Degtyarev defended his title in the up to 54kg category. He managed to hold off a strong challenge from Cuba’s Pablo Ramirez to retain his gold medal, continuing his success from the Tokyo Games.

Degtyarev expressed his satisfaction with his victory, saying, “After Tokyo, I prepared myself non-stop all three years, aiming to win again. I can’t say which one (medal) is more important. They are both very important for me.”

Conclusion

China's powerlifters, especially Guo Lingling and Cui Zhe, showed incredible strength and determination on the first day of the Paris 2024 Paralympics, securing world records and gold medals. Their achievements, along with the victories of Jordan’s Omar Qarada and Kazakhstan’s David Degtyarev, highlighted the intense preparation and dedication of athletes competing on the global stage.
