His father, Guy Gaudreau, was a hockey coach, and Johnny grew up playing hockey alongside his brother, Matthew. The Gaudreau family was deeply involved in the local hockey community, and Johnny began playing the sport at a very young age.

Despite his talent, Gaudreau was often overlooked due to his small stature. However, his determination, speed, and skill on the ice set him apart from his peers.

Junior Hockey Career.

Johnny Gaudreau played for the Dubuque Fighting Saints in the United States Hockey League (USHL) during the 2010-2011 season. His performance in the USHL was impressive, as he scored 72 points in 60 games, helping his team win the Clark Cup Championship. His outstanding play caught the attention of college scouts and NHL teams.

College Career.

Gaudreau committed to Boston College, where he played three seasons (2011-2014) in the NCAA. During his time with the Boston College Eagles, Gaudreau became one of the most dynamic and exciting players in college hockey. In his freshman year, he helped Boston College win the NCAA National Championship, scoring 44 points in 44 games.

His sophomore and junior years saw him further establish himself as a top prospect. In his junior year (2013-2014), Gaudreau had a breakout season, leading the nation in scoring with 80 points in 40 games. His stellar performance earned him the Hobey Baker Award, which is given to the top college hockey player in the United States.

NHL Career.

Draft and Early Years with the Calgary Flames:

Johnny Gaudreau was drafted by the Calgary Flames in the 4th round, 104th overall, in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. Despite being a late-round pick, Gaudreau quickly proved himself to be an elite player.

He made his NHL debut on April 13, 2014, in the final game of the regular season against the Vancouver Canucks. Gaudreau scored his first NHL goal in that game, giving Flames fans a glimpse of what was to come.

Rising Star:

Gaudreau’s first full season in the NHL was in 2014-2015, and he made an immediate impact. He scored 64 points in 80 games, earning him a spot as a finalist for the Calder Memorial Trophy, awarded to the NHL’s Rookie of the Year. Gaudreau quickly became known for his dazzling stickhandling, speed, and ability to make plays that few others could.

Over the next several seasons, Gaudreau continued to establish himself as one of the NHL’s top offensive players. He consistently ranked among the league leaders in points, playing alongside notable linemates like Sean Monahan and Elias Lindholm. His breakout year came in the 2018-2019 season when he scored a career-high 99 points (36 goals and 63 assists) in 82 games, earning him a spot on the NHL’s First All-Star Team.

Transition to Columbus Blue Jackets:

Despite his success with the Flames, Gaudreau made a surprising decision in the summer of 2022. As a free agent, he signed a seven-year, $68.25 million contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets. The move shocked many, as it was expected that he would sign with a team closer to his home on the East Coast, or stay with Calgary.

In his first season with the Blue Jackets (2022-2023), Gaudreau continued to be a key player, though the team faced struggles. Despite the challenges, he remained a fan favorite and was known for his leadership both on and off the ice.

International Career.

Johnny Gaudreau has represented the United States in international competition several times. He played in the 2013 World Junior Championships, where he helped the U.S. team win a gold medal. Gaudreau also represented the U.S. in the IIHF World Championships in 2014 and 2017, where he was one of the team's leading scorers.

Playing Style.

Johnny Gaudreau is known for his exceptional offensive skills. Despite being smaller than many of his peers, his quickness, agility, and hockey IQ allow him to navigate through defenses and create scoring opportunities. His ability to control the puck and make precise passes has earned him the nickname "Johnny Hockey." Gaudreau is also praised for his vision on the ice, allowing him to anticipate plays and set up his teammates.

Personal Life.

Off the ice, Johnny Gaudreau is known for his humble and hardworking nature. He is close with his family, and his father’s influence as a hockey coach has been a significant part of his journey. Gaudreau is also involved in charity work, supporting causes such as children’s hospitals and youth hockey programs.
